What is lock rekeying?

In simple terms lock rekeying means changing the internal components of a given lock such as the tumblers and fitting a new key, therefore, the old key will no longer be able to operate the lock.

How is lock rekeying done?

When a Triton Locksmith professional arrives on site, they will evaluate the type of the locks that are installed on your doors and proceed with removing the hardware. (In some locks such as the Kwikset Smart Key systems, no removal of hardware is needed). A functional key of the existing locks will be required for rekeying most locks, if there are no working keys, the process of rekeying the locks will become more difficult since the lock must be turned in order to extract the lock cylinder. Once the cylinders are removed from the hardware, disassembly of the cylinder is needed in order to access the pins (tumblers) of the lock.

After the lock cylinder has been removed from it’s housing, we will simply discard the existing tumblers and replace them with a new set of pins that will match a new key. Once the new pins have been placed in the correct pattern, we will assemble the lock and install it on your door.

In a nutshell this is how we rekey locks.
